With AI, researchers predict the location...

A protein located in the wrong part of a cell can contribute to several diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis, and cancer. But there are about 70,000 different proteins and protein variants in a single human cell, and since scientists can typically only test for a handful in one experiment, it is extremely costly and time-consuming to identify proteins’ locations manually. A new generation of computational techniques seeks to streamline the process using machine-learning models that often leverage datasets containing thousands of proteins and their locations, measured across multiple cell lines. One of the largest such datasets is the Human Protein Atlas, which catalogs the subcellular behavior of over 13,000 proteins in more than 40 cell lines. But as enormous as it is, the Human Protein Atlas has only explored about 0.25 percent of all possible pairings of all proteins and cell lines within the database. Now, researchers from MIT, Harvard University, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard have developed a new computational approach that can efficiently explore the remaining uncharted space. Their method can predict the location of any protein in any human cell line, even when both protein and cell have never been tested before. Their...

Marek Rosa – dev blog: Marek’s...

What is this Every Thursday, I will share a dev diary about what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. I’ll focus on the interesting challenges and solutions that I encountered. I won’t be able to cover everything, but I’ll share what caught my interest. Why am I doing it I want to bring our community along on this journey, and I simply love writing about things I’m passionate about! This is my unfiltered dev journal, so please keep in mind that what I write here are my thoughts and will be outdated by the time you read this, as so many things change quickly. Any plans I mention aren’t set in stone and everything is subject to change. Also, if you don’t like spoilers, then don’t read this. Space Engineers 2 We have started with weekly updates, adding new blocks every Thursday I am amazed by everything our players are creatively building in SE2. Some recent examples: We’ve started work on improving the jumping animation. The current problem is that we only have one animation, irrelevant of whether the jump starts from the left leg or the right leg. The result is that it feels unnatural and...

What is AI Ethics? – Kavita...

As AI continues to become more prevalent in our lives, it is crucial to consider the ethical implications of its use. Although AI can augment and revolutionize how we live, work, and interact with each other, it can also cause harm if not used or developed correctly. People can be wrongly imprisoned when facial recognition systems fail in law enforcement and the judicial system. People can be killed if self-driving cars fail to correctly see them as pedestrians on the road. Things can go awfully wrong if we fail to think about the implications of how we use and develop these AI-powered tools.  This article is part of a series that will explore what AI ethics means, its implications to society, and how businesses can start leading the way by doing AI responsibly while also reaping its benefits.  In this article, we’ll focus on what ethics means in the context of AI. What is AI Ethics? Ethics in the context of AI is all about doing AI responsibly, keeping questions as outlined below in consideration: DATA ETIQUETTE AI systems today are data-dependent; that’s how machine-learning-driven AI systems learn. The underlying data that you use can significantly impact how the model...

Modernisation is Key to Unlocking Insights In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, financial institutions are increasingly recognising the critical need to modernise their data infrastructure. For many, the choice is no longer whether to modernise, but how to do so effectively. Aging legacy systems, once the backbone of operations, are now costly to maintain and inefficient in meeting the complex data demands of today’s financial markets. These outdated systems trap valuable data within organisational silos, leaving what could be transformative insights untapped.

Can “Safe AI” Companies Survive in...

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, the landscape is becoming increasingly competitive and ethically fraught. Companies like Anthropic, which have missions centered on developing “safe AI,” face unique challenges in an ecosystem where speed, innovation, and unconstrained power are often prioritized over safety and ethical considerations. In this post, we explore whether such companies can realistically survive and thrive amidst these pressures, particularly in comparison to competitors who may disregard safety to achieve faster and more aggressive rollouts. The Case for “Safe AI” Anthropic, along with a handful of other companies, has committed to developing AI systems that are demonstrably safe, transparent, and aligned with human values. Their mission emphasizes minimizing harm and avoiding unintended consequences—goals that are crucial as AI systems grow in influence and complexity. Advocates of this approach argue that safety is not just an ethical imperative but also a long-term business strategy. By building trust and ensuring that AI systems are robust and reliable, companies like Anthropic hope to carve out a niche in the market as responsible and sustainable innovators. The Pressure to Compete However, the realities of the marketplace may undermine these noble ambitions. AI companies that impose safety constraints on themselves inevitably...

Wildlife Crossing Monitoring and Prediction for...

Turning a corner at night, a couple of bright dots flash in front of you, standing still as your car quickly approaches them. Will you be fast enough to stop the vehicle before hitting the deer in the middle of the road? Ungulates are the large mammals mostly involved in car accidents in Europe and North America. If you are used to drive in the countryside or in roads close to forests, hills, mountains, or large uninhabited regions, this scenario probably sounds familiar to you. Deer and large mammals crossing the road represent a life-threatening and  common problem in many countries worldwide. In USA, it is estimated that more than a million vehicle accidents per year involve wildlife, corresponding to avove $8 billion in medical costs and car repairs annually (National Geographic, “Wildlife Crossing”).  Animal crossing is a severe human safety and wild life preservation problem in country roads in all continents. The problem is analogously relevant also from the perspective of wildlife well-being. As an example, even though formal records are only maintained in a small proportion of countries at the European level, the full toll of ungulates killed annually on European roads is estimated to be close to...
