How to Build Your Personal Brand...

Personal branding is a thing now. It always has been, but I believe it’s been getting more and more attention recently. More people are aware of its importance, including the employers. Giving you a big paycheck, assuming you’re good, is obvious. Providing opportunities to flourish and build your personal brand is something an increasing number of companies are trying to seduce you with. While working in the algorithms group at Taboola, I was encouraged by the company to share my knowledge with the data science community. It has motivated me to embark on a journey to build my personal brand as a data scientist, and I want to share how I did it with you. There are many paths you can choose in your journey to build your personal brand. The problem is that your time is limited. There’s a lot of uncertainty about each path and its outcomes, so it’s best to make educated decisions. There are several criteria by which I judge each path: How likely is it that I’ll get to the finish line? This is the most important criterion when you just start building your brand. If you fail on the first path you tried, it’s gonna...

On trust and responsible innovation: ‘Right...

Since AI is advancing faster than regulation and innovation is outpacing understanding, two principles must rise above the noise: trust and responsible innovation. That was the central message for industry leaders during another day of SAS Innovate 2025. Show host and recently named Chief Operating Officer Gavin Day said this core tenet begins before the first line of code is written. “These are really volatile and uncertain times, perhaps the most volatile we’ve faced in our careers,” he said. But it’s not new territory for SAS, which is on the brink of 50 years in business. “We’ve seen everything, so we’re here to help you through anything, especially when we know market forces are working for and against you.” Gavin Day speaks about trust and innovation Goodnight and Nadella on the big picture But even with a partner like SAS, he believes organizational success and the ability to forge through challenging times begin at the top. Day said there are no better examples – “titans,” he called them – than SAS CEO Jim Goodnight and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. The two engaged in a recorded video discussion that helped set the tone for the event, discussing topics that included...

The Beginning of a New Era...

Our AI Codecon conference kicked off today with Coding with AI: The End of Software Development as We Know It. Here are my opening remarks introducing the series’ themes. You can reserve your seat for upcoming AI Codecon events here. Thanks so much for joining us today. We have over 20,000 people signed up for this event, both subscribers on the O’Reilly learning platform and those who aren’t yet subscribers. I think you’re here because you all sense what I do: We’re witnessing not the end of programming but its remarkable expansion. This is the most exciting moment in software development that I’ve seen during my more than 40 years in this industry. I organized this event because I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with a persistent narrative: that AI will replace programmers. I’ve heard versions of this same prediction with every technological leap forward—and it’s always been wrong. Not just slightly wrong, but fundamentally misunderstanding how technology evolves. Programming, at its essence, is conversation with computers. It’s how we translate human intention into machine action. Throughout computing history, we’ve continuously built better translation layers between human thought and machine execution—from physical wiring to assembly language to high-level languages to the World...

Function Calling at the Edge –...

The ability of LLMs to execute commands through plain language (e.g. English) has enabled agentic systems that can complete a user query by orchestrating the right set of tools (e.g. ToolFormer, Gorilla). This, along with the recent multi-modal efforts such as the GPT-4o or Gemini-1.5 model, has expanded the realm of possibilities with AI agents. While this is quite exciting, the large model size and computational requirements of these models often requires their inference to be performed on the cloud. This can create several challenges for their widespread adoption. First and foremost, uploading data such as video, audio, or text documents to a third party vendor on the cloud, can result in privacy issues. Second, this requires cloud/Wi-Fi connectivity which is not always possible. For instance, a robot deployed in the real world may not always have a stable connection. Besides that, latency could also be an issue as uploading large amounts of data to the cloud and waiting for the response could slow down response time, resulting in unacceptable time-to-solution. These challenges could be solved if we deploy the LLM models locally at the edge.

Working From Home: The Good &...

Posted On: April 11, 2020   Work from home is rapidly becoming a desirable benefit that an employer can offer. Especially, keeping in mind the contemporary situation, companies that didn’t have policies in place, are also forced to dive into the idea. But from a larger perspective, the freedom to work in a flexible schedule and location is a great motivation for some who want to do away with the monotony of office life, and even keep working while tending to their families. A Gartner survey predicts that, By 2030, the demand for remote work will increase by 30% as Generation Z completely enters the workforce.   Working from home helps small businesses to maintain business continuity In a recent survey, 81% of onsite workers thought that the ability to work remotely would make them happier. Happiness aside, however, small businesses must figure out how to make work from home a reality in COVID 19 crisis. In a severely condensed timeline when the world is under lockdown, the workforce is working from home more than ever before. The small business needs to keep the virtual doors open and get the productivity out of employees even when the physical doors are closed....

The interview guide for domain experts...

This article is a cutout of my forthcoming book that you can sign up for here: https://www.danrose.ai/book When interviewing domain experts for artificial intelligence solutions, it’s essential to avoid discussing a specific solution but instead focus on the business outcome and the problem at hand. When you interview experts, they sometimes settle on a particular solution too early, even without knowing it. As the solution architect, you might also do the same and miss out on better alternatives. I often catch myself doing that as finding the perfect solution is the most satisfying part of the discovery phase. To focus on the problem and business outcome, I use the following guide as inspiration for questions. Question: Tell me about the last time you did X (E.g. forecasted sales or did shift planning at the ice cream store) The question works better than “How do you do forecasting?”. Asking this way will provide you with a polished best-case answer. The subject matter expert will tell you how everything is supposed to be done. We all want to present our best version of ourselves, and we can be a little afraid of admitting that we jump hoops when we are busy or...

How a furniture retailer automated order...

Photo by Jessie McCall / Unsplash Selling custom-made furniture in this age of mass production is not easy. But this mid-sized, Europe-focused furniture retailer was making it work. Their secret? Letting customers choose everything — from fabric choices to sofa leg styles, even down to the color of decorative nails. However, as sales grew, the made-to-order created a major problem. Each order was unique — different fabrics, custom features, and special requirements. The team had to carefully handle each customization, create detailed specifications for suppliers, and ensure every special request was correctly manufactured. When suppliers sent back order confirmations, the real challenge began. With an 8-week order cycle, processing delays meant customers waited without updates. Order backlogs grew, negative reviews increased, and 20-30% of all orders were experiencing some form of error or issue. They needed a way to process these documents accurately without hiring more staff. The real cost of manual supplier order management The supplier documents arrived as complex PDFs — some up to 16 pages long, in multiple languages, and with different technical notations. Their seven-person operations team spent 10-15 hours per week per person processing these documents. That’s 70-105 hours weekly just matching...
